The Mertens Water Monitor is a large aquatic monitor (over 1 metre)which can remain submerged for a considerable length of time. It's diet includes fish, crabs and frogs, as well as more standard monitor food items. Up to 12 eggs are usually laid, which take about 270 days to hatch at 30 Degrees Centigrade in captivity.
